2014 PetroSA MARATHON

PetroSA Group CEO, Nosiswe– Nokwe Macamo, Group Communications Manager , Mr Thabo Mabaso , Mr Russel Mamabolo , Executive Mayor , Alder lady Marie Ferreira, Members of the Media. All protocol observed.

We Athletics SWD, wish to acknowledge with honour and gratitude the commencement of the 2nd Annual PetroSA Marathon that will be hosted in Mossel Bay, 27 September 2014.

Athletics SWD, herewith values the PetroSA financial contribution of R1,3 million towards the professional management and staging of this prestigious event.

We, due to this partnership, wish to announce the participation of elite athletes that will add value to the event. These include participants from various African Countries, including Eritrea, Kenya, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Lesotho and also South Africa.

All three distances (10km, 21.1km and 42.2km) has been measured by an IAAF qualified route measurer, to ensure proper standardisation of the event.

We applied to IAAF for bronze label status, with the implication that athletes running the qualifying standards can run in any international events such as Commonwealth Games, World Youth Games, and Olympics etc.

All winners that will be participating in the 42.2km will be subjected to mandatory drug testing by Drug Free Sport South Africa.

For the first time in its brief history the RACE will be fully electronic chip timed.

Athletics SWD acknowledges the importance and value which this partnership between PetroSA and Mossel Bay Municipality which forms an essential part of the Sport Festival.

The Winners in the Marathon will receive equal Prize money to amount of R60,000. 00 including both male and female participants. A total amount of R581,000 is up for grabs in all the distances and categories.

ASWD Athletes , that constitutes local participants will also benefit and receive incentives to the amount of R41,000

The Internationally recognised elite athletes and speedsters will prior to the main event visit local schools in Mossel Bay as part of the PetroSA Development Project.

Our aim includes the maximum participation of South African Runners from all local Clubs and Provinces .

This is an informed attempt to bolster ultimate and overall number participation

We trust that all athletes , participants , coaches , managers etc will contribute towards a memorable event to be staged on 27 September 2014
